      After you get a university degree (a Bachelors Degree) you can choose to study even further, for a Masters Degree and then a PhD (A Doctor of Philosophy). This involves about 3-4 years of study on a single research topic and then you have to write up the resulting thesis (a big 100-200 page book).
      When this is examined and you pass you become a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and this allows you to use Dr as your title.
