My personal area of interest is in new materials that resist wear better than today’s materials. That means they need to be hard and tough but also affordable (we cant just make everything out of diamond).
It has been estimated that problems caused by the wear of materials cost ~£14bn globally.

I’d like to learn more about alternative means of energy production and storage, like new methods for using the sun’s energy. Silicon solar cells are very expensive to make and maintain and so a lot of research around the world goes into finding new and improved methods of using solar energy. This field of work seems very interesting and worthwhile to me.

But you’re right, there’s so much to study, and only so many hours in the day!
