It’s frustrating at the moment that I only get to work on short term contracts, but that’s normal for someone at this stage in their career. Hopefully within the next few years I will be able to get a permanent job.
For me, it would be the same as elsewhere: The unwillingness of people to adapt to changing environments. Instead, people continue to do things as they have always done, without thinking of the wider consequences of their actions. One of the more drastic examples is the depletion of natural resources by our style of living.
More to the point: In science, we have many rituals which have evolved under conditions that have changed fundamentally since. To give just one example: Most science communication is still centred around “papers” (i.e. a narrative summary of research that has been done, printed some months to years after the experiments), although most of the actual research takes place in digital form and could in principle be shared right away if the system as a whole were structured accordingly.
